Hey Mama, your mental well-being is so important, especially when you have a precious little one looking up to you. Breastfeeding is a beautiful journey, whatever you do, don't get discouraged!
When our twin babies were first born, I struggled with dysphoric milk ejection reflex (D-MER), a rare condition that causes strong negative emotions, for me it was deep sadness, right before milk is released. I was also dealing with PPD. In the early months, after my husband returned to work, it was just me and the babies and my intrusive thoughts. Every day I battled with intrusive thoughts, and immense feelings of sadness, guilt, and fear. During breastfeeds, I would feel overwhelmingly sad, but for no reason. I didn’t like to look at my postpartum belly with its stretch marks, or even see my boobs. I didn’t like the way I felt in my “new body”.
The postpartum period was a long and challenging journey of healing. I decided against medication and instead opted for cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) with a therapist specializing in perinatal care.I was nervous at first, and a little apprehensive but with a mama friend’s encouragement I decided to pursue therapy. I gained valuable insights from the experience, and it was particularly comforting to speak with a female counselor who was also a mom and had been through PPD. My therapist introduced me to the concept of D-MER and encouraged me to create a serene environment during breastfeeding sessions.
Creating a cozy atmosphere while breastfeeding can make the experience more enjoyable and comforting for both you and your baby.

Here are some simple tips to create a peaceful environment:
1. Set Up a Cozy Breastfeeding Nook
Designate a comfortable, quiet space in your home for breastfeeding. This nook should be inviting and tailored to your needs. Add a comfortable chair or cushion, a soft blanket, and a good reading light. Personalize the space with calming elements like a scented candle (if safe), a small plant, or a favorite piece of art. Creating a dedicated, serene spot helps signal to your body and mind that it's time to relax and bond with your baby, making each feeding session a special and cherished time.
2. Gather Your Mama Essentials
Having your essentials within arm's reach can make breastfeeding more comfortable and minimize stress. 3 am is not the time to be searching for your breastfeeding necessities. Make sure you have items like burp cloths, Haakaa (to collect extra milk from the other breast), nursing pads, pacifier (once the baby is done nursing), snacks and a water bottle nearby. A supportive nursing pillow or a soft blanket can also enhance comfort and relaxation during feeding sessions.
3. Have an Encouraging Book, Devotional, or Inspiring Quote Nearby
Breastfeeding can be a quiet time for reflection and personal growth. It can also be a time when your mind is spiraling out of control with to-do lists or intrusive thoughts that flood in. Instead of scrolling on your phone, keep a book, devotional, or a collection of inspiring quotes close by. This can provide a sense of peace, helping you stay centered and uplifted, especially during longer sessions. One of my goals as a mother is to be deeply rooted in the Word of God, and have my mind filled with truth at the ready whenever I need encouragement, or when I can encourage others. Sometimes if I wasn’t reading, I would just pray over my babies and thank God for the treasure He has given me.
4. Bring Your Favorite Snacks
Breastfeeding demands a significant amount of energy, and you burn a lot of calories at each feeding or pump session. Breastfeeding often increases hunger, so having healthy and satisfying snacks nearby is key. Nuts, fruit, lactation cookies, and granola bars are excellent choices that will give you the energy you need while keeping you nourished. Boobie Bars and the Munchkin Milkmakers lactation cookie bites are a little pricey but they are delicious, and honestly worth the investment as in the early days you are trying to get your breastmilk established. I enjoyed eating them during my breastfeeds in the first few weeks after giving birth.
5. Play Relaxing Music
Music can create a soothing atmosphere, both for you and your baby. Soft, calming music or nature sounds can help you relax, making the breastfeeding experience more peaceful. Create a mama and baby playlist that you can play in the background to help calm you during feeds. Try to soak in the moment, and destress as much as possible, because if you are stressed, your baby can sense it. Try experimenting with different genres to find what works best for you, whether it's classical, lofi, soft worship, acoustic, or even baby instrumental tunes.
By incorporating these small comforts, you can turn breastfeeding into a cozy, nurturing time for both you and your little one.

Praise God for healing - around 6 ½ months, I felt like the fog had lifted and I was returning to my old self. I am so grateful for my mama friends, and my mom who poured life into me during my Postpartum Depression. I am grateful for my husband who loved me unconditionally and was my biggest support. Lastly, my two wonderful babies who made me a mama - they always brought me so much joy and helped brighten my day when I was struggling. Their cuddles and smiles were so life-giving, and it still is!
