In this post, you’ll find an easy, step-by-step guide + printable to create your own DIY cookie boxes.

What Is Inside a DIY Cookie Kit Box?

A DIY Cookie Kit Box is fully customizable, but it will typically include undecorated sugar cookies, royal icing, sprinkles, crinkle paper, and instructions. You can also include fun extras like a mini nutella jar, chocolate truffles, a mini cookie cutter, or a mini whisk.

Why Cookie Kit Boxes Make the Perfect Gift

Finding the perfect gift for your loved ones can be near to impossible sometimes! DIY cookie kits make great gifts because it's budget-friendly (and you can make them in bulk), they are easy to personalize for the occasion/season/person, and a fun family holiday tradition.

Supplies You’ll Need

  • Pie boxes with clear window
  • Icing bags
  • Small containers with lids
  • Crinkle paper
  • Sprinkles
  • Mini spoons
  • Sugar cookies (click here for recipe)
  • Royal icing (click here for recipe)
  • Optional: heat sealer, heat bags, heat gun
  • Card stock for instructions

Step-by-Step: How to Assemble a DIY Cookie Kit Box

Step 1: Bake Your Cookies

Start by baking the cookies you want to include in your kit. Sugar cookies are always a hit because they’re simple, sturdy, and perfect for decorating. My sugar cookie recipe makes 2 1/2 - 3 dozen depending on how thick the dough is rolled and how big the cookie cutter is. You can also bake gingerbread cookies, especially during the holidays. I’ve found that 6 shaped sugar cookies fit perfectly in a box. More than 6 will make the box too heavy and too crowded for the other decorating essentials.

Step 2: Make Your Icing

Next, whip up a batch of simple royal icing. It dries beautifully and is the classic choice for cookie decorating kits. You can divide the icing into small bowls and add different colors—holiday red, gold and green, soft pastels, or whatever theme you’re going for. When it’s ready, package the icing in small piping bags. Just be sure they’re sealed tightly so nothing leaks in the box.

Step 3: Pick Fun Toppings

No cookie kit is complete without colorful sprinkles! I chose three types of sprinkles for each box. I get my sprinkles in bulk from Amazon, but you can also find them at Michael’s, JoAnn, Target, Walmart, etc. You can add a little variety by including mini chocolate chips, crushed candy canes, or even colored sugar.

Step 4: Package Everything Neatly

Now it’s time to assemble the box. Start by adding a layer of crinkle paper to cushion everything and make it look professional. Place the cookies on one side, sprinkles in the middle and the icing on the other so it stays balanced and looks organized.

Step 5: Add a Cute Instruction Card

Finish your kit by tucking in a simple instruction card. Include quick “How to Decorate” steps so the recipient knows exactly what to do. You can also add a short personal note to make the gift feel thoughtful and extra special.

Exact Amounts You Need for Each Cookie Kit

  • 6 sugar cookies
  • 3 bags of medium consistency royal icing
  • 3 containers of sprinkles
  • 80g of royal icing per bag
  • 20g of crinkle paper per box
  • 25g of sprinkles per cup

If you don't have a kitchen scale, I highly recommend adding this kitchen appliance to your arsenal!

Tips for Making Your Cookie Kits Look Like They’re Store-bought

  • Make sure you don’t over bake your sugar cookies—once they start to brown around the edges, they lose that soft, light aesthetic you want for decorating. I like to check on mine a couple of times while they’re baking just to be sure they stay pale. Since these cookies won’t be covered in decorations, keeping them light and not even a little burnt makes a big difference in how they look.
  • To keep cookies extra fresh, you can shrink wrap them. This way they also don’t make a bunch of crumbs in the cookie box or get greasy.
  • Choose coordinating colors for a cohesive look. I try to pick colors that will most likely be needed for the theme. For example, if I include a Christmas tree, ornaments and light bulb cookies, I will include green, red and white.
  • Use clear gift wrap tape to seal the boxes.
  • Create a personalized “baked with love” sticker.
